Hi, I'm Luis

ionic aficionado | self-proclaimed horse wisperer
Brooksville, Florida (2014)

About Me

Who am I? My name is Luis Cabrera. I am a family man and a dedicated dad who believes that family always comes first. During the day, I am an Applications Architect by profession and an ionic aficionado by choice. Aside from technology and family, I truly enjoy the outdoors and working on our horse farm.

I was born and raised in Guatemala, Central America, and came to the United States during the dot-com bubble in August of 2000 after being hired by a start-up (dot-com) company. So after selling everything we owned in Guatemala, my wife and I moved to Florida with our 3 kids and 2 dogs and two months later the company went south and it closed it’s doors. That’s when I learned the hard way that there was a dot-com bubble and it had burst. Imagine the look in my wife’s face when I broke the news. Yeah…

But no complains after that. Life has been taking care of us (with lots of cuts, countless bruises and bleeding noses, that is…)

About This Site

This site is the result of an itch I have that pushes me to get out of my comfort zone and experiment with new technologies.

I built this site using Jekyll 3.3.1 and Github Pages. For the theme, I am using a combination of two themes into one: { Personal } Jekyll Theme and Beautiful Jekyll.

I modified the original { Personal } Jekyll Theme for 2 reasons: The first one to learn how to use Jekyll on a Windows platform; and the second one to meet my specific taste in terms of look and feel. For the other theme, Beautiful Jekyll, I only extracted a couple of pieces of logic that I liked. Beautiful Jekyll was my first option as a theme but I was never able to get it to work on a Windows PC. Some Ruby Gems would just not install.
